Calculation Basis

Emission Factor: GLEC Framework v3.0 default (Well-to-Wheel, gCO2eq/tonne-km).

Numbers are efficiency values per tonne of cargo. A 40ft container shows lower emissions than 20ft on a per-tonne basis (fuel consumption does not scale linearly with load, so larger containers are more efficient per tonne — economy of scale).

Distance: Table values take precedence. When a route is not in the table, Air uses Haversine (great-circle, industry standard, 1-3% error), Rail uses great-circle × 1.3 (±10-20% for borders/mountains), and Sea requires manual entry (auto-estimation is unreliable because actual routes via Suez/Panama can be 2.5× the great-circle distance).

This tool provides reference estimates for decision support. It is not a substitute for mandatory disclosure or third-party verification.

Positioning of this tool

Scope 3 emissions disclosure (supply-chain greenhouse gas emissions, including transport) is under increasing regulatory and stakeholder pressure for large shippers. When a forwarder can provide transport emissions figures, those figures can flow directly into the shipper's integrated report or sustainability report.

This tool uses industry-standard GLEC Framework defaults. For more precise calculations based on carrier-specific measured values, please contact us.

Pacific Inc. also provides per-shipment CO2 estimates, actuals, and mode-optimization proposals combining sea, air, and land legs.

We provide measured-value calculations, mode comparisons, and summaries for Scope 3 disclosure.
